Archive for July, 2008
Friends, we have been Beer and Blogging it since the beginning of the year. After almost 8 months, I think we finally have a predictable format. Here’s what I’m thinking we’ll do:
- First week - Work Session
- Second week - Topic
- Third week - Work Session
- Fourth week - Field trip
- Fifth week - Off
I’m also planning to get some schwag! Stickers and beer coasters are coming soon. I’ll have an official table flag that I’ll start bringing to the sessions tomorrow so new people can quickly identify us. I’ll also bring some name tags and Sharpies if people would like to put their various online handles on them so people know who you are.
Tomorrow is the first Friday of August, so we’ll be doing a work session. Looking forward to seeing everyone! As always, you can RSVP on Upcoming.

Welcome OSCON attendees to the land of beer and honey known around the world as Portland. We’d like to invite all of you to enjoy a pint of delicious beer with us on Friday from 4-6 pm. Beer and Blog is Portland’s tech scene happy hour of choice and we usually help each other with our blogs. At least that’s what I keep repeating. Mostly we end up drinking beer and celebrating that the work week is over with the people who can relate to us the most. We’d love to have you come and join us to talk about OSCON, Portland, beer, and technology in no specific order.
The place to be is the Green Dragon. It’s a brewery. They don’t make beer yet, but they serve tons of killer beers from the area. They also distill gin and absinthe. Since it will be happy hour, they have a dozen tasty food options for $3 each.
Look forward to toasting another great OSCON with you there! You can RSVP on Upcoming.

Most of us have more than a few cards up our sleeves that give us a competitive advantage. I know I’ve got a whole bag of tricks that I’ve built up over the years. Today, we’re going to share some of those sweet secrets with the group. The idea here is not to spill your guts and tell all, rather that if we all share a little somethin’ then we will all learn a lot. Around the time that we usually do our presentation, I’ll start us off by revealing a couple of techniques I use to be better at my job. Then, I’d like to open the floor for other folks to offer a pearl of wisdom to the group.
Now, don’t get all sloppy drunk and tell secrets that aren’t helpful to the group like the way @tiesque always does. Secrets should be relevant to a blogger, which could be about design, content, programming, socializing, etc.
I’m looking forward to this one! If you are too, then consider RSVPing on Upcoming.

Today is iPhone Friday and most people will be enamored with their new shiny phones or making statements about how they don’t want a stupid iPhone anyway *ahem* @harrisja. Since we don’t plan to steal the iPhone’s thunder, we’re going to do today what Beer and Blog started out doing—bloggers helping bloggers over beers!
Here’s the first post for Beer and Blog stating its charter:
Are you tired of feeling frustrated about the design or functionality of your blog? Do you have questions but have no one to turn to? Do you have a blog, live in or around Portland, and enjoy drinking beer? Well then, this meet up is for you!
Come join fellow Portland bloggers for a work session every Friday from 4pm until at least 6pm at the [Green Dragon]. We help each other work on our blogs. Maybe you need some design help. Maybe you want to power your comments form with OpenID, but don’t know how. Maybe you just need the social space to get off your duff and do the shit you tell everyone you’re going to do. Whatever your story, we’ll be then and there enjoying delicious beers and pounding keys. We’ll be the ones with the extension cord and power strip huddled around a grip of mostly Mac laptops.
And, that’s exactly what we’ll today at 4pm at the Green Dragon. I plan to end promptly at 6pm because most people will be going to the iPhone 3G & App Store Launch Party hosted at Platial, which goes from 6-9pm.
I posted this event on Upcoming.
Please take this 4th of July to spend with your friends and family. You can still enjoy beer and maybe even blog, but you should def watch something blow up. It’s the American way.
